Research & Consultancy Projects

I have the pleasure and privilege of working with social purpose driven universities, brands and organisations who are always looking for new and effective ways to enhance the mental health and well-being of girls, women and underpresented groups.

My collaborators include the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), Pennington Biomedical Research Center, The Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport, the Dove Self-Esteem ProjectTalk2U, UNICEFNike, and more.

Check out some of the projects that we've brought to life, or reach out to hear about current projects that I'm conducting independently and with Everybody Consulting.

Steven Universe

Dove, CAR and Cartoon Network's Steven Universe partnered to develop a cataolgue of resources for children, including a song, an animated series and an e-book. Children and their parents can join Steven and the Crystal Gems on numerous adventures, as they explore the importance of representation, inclusion and diversity. Emily helped develop the content for all resources, and lead the evaluation of the animated series and ebook via two large randomized controlled trials in the UK.

Self-Esteem Squad

Self-Esteem Squad is Donkey Kong for Body Esteem! Dove, CAR and Playmob partnered to develop the first Body Esteem Playable ad; an interactive form of advertising that can distrupt and offset harmful social media content. Players have to collect confidence coins, all the while avoiding common body esteem traps, including negative self-talk and social comparisons. Emily helped develop the Self-Esteem Squad, and lead the evaluation of the game via a large randomized controlled trial in the UK.

Topity

Topity was the first body image chatbot to be launched for adolescents. It includeds a series of 'micro-intervenions', which are bite-size activities that adolescents can work through, with the support of an Avatar. The chatbot is currently available in Brazilian Portuguese, but offers a blue print that can be translated into other languages and for different cultural contexts. Emily led the development of the chatbot content and techniques, and the evaluation of the  bot via a large randomized controlled trial in Brazil.

Body Confident Sport

Body Confident Sport is a new global initiative developed by Dove, CAR, Nike and the Tucker Center. It provides athletes, coaches and sport communities with the knowledge and skills to create safer and more inclusive sport environments that foster body confidence. Emily led the development and evaluation of the Body Confident Athletes program, and supervised the overall research project and tasks for Body Confident Sport.
